But remember, always seek the assistance of a certified trampoline instructor when trying new tricks.
The Stop Bounce
This is the most basic of the beginner trampoline tricks. The stop bounce is designed to get you out of a sticky situation, or just allow you to get off the trampoline safely. It should always be used when you feel like you’re jumping too high, or if you’ve found yourself out of control. The simplest way to describe this maneuver is to bend your knees and stick out your arms as if you’re riding a motorcycle. This position allows your legs to act as shock absorbers while your arms balance your upper body. If done correctly, you should come to an immediate stop on the trampoline while maintaining a strong standing position.
Pro Tip: The Stop Bounce is the most important beginner skill to learn. It is important you master it before progressing onto any other skills.
The Star Jump
One of the simplest beginner trampoline tricks is called the Star Jump. This basic skill is performed exactly as it sounds. Jump as high as you can (but not out of control) and make the shape of a star by raising your hands above your shoulder height and spreading your legs apart. If done correctly, you should appear to sail through the air like a star in the sky. Don’t forget to lower your arms and bring your legs back together before you land back on the trampoline though. That is very important!
Pro Tip: This skill looks great when done with enthusiasm. It can easily appear sloppy when performed with bent arms or legs, or without a smile on your face 😉 .
The Tuck Jump
Moving along in the beginner trampoline tricks top 5. This is the Tuck Jump. Quite simply jump as high as you feel comfortable and raise your knees up to your chest or as high as they can go (stretching and conditioning is be the best way improve flexibility in order to get your knees up higher. But more on that later.) Make sure you touch your knees with your hands and/or wrap your arms around your knees to make the shape of a cannon ball. As always, don’t forget to put your legs back down underneath you before landing on the trampoline. When performed correctly, this trick can make you look like a professional trampolinist on your way to a competition.
Pro Tip: When attempting the Tuck Jump for the first time do not hesitate. Move your legs quickly. One of the most common mistakes is to hold the legs in the tuck position for too long resulting in a scramble to land properly.
The Pike Jump
Next in the top 5 beginner trampoline tricks is The Pike Jump. This is another trick that benefits from a natural talent in flexibility. As always, your flexibility can be improved with a little daily stretching and flexibility work. Anyway, The Pike Jump consists of bouncing at a comfortable height, raising your legs into the air, and attempting to touch your toes. In order to complete this trick successfully, make sure your legs are stuck together and your knees are straight and not bent. Many first time jumpers have difficulty with this skill as they find that lifting their legs sometimes causes some backwards rotation making it difficult to land on their feet without falling backwards. If that happens to you, don’t forget your “Stop Bounce” skill to help regain control!
Pro Tip: Start lifting your legs gradually. Do not rush and try to bring your legs as high as possible on your first attempt. Slowly get a feel for it before progressing further.
The Straddle Jump
Number 5 in our top beginner trampoline tricks Is The Straddle Jump. Very similar to The Pike Jump, the straddle jump requires that you jump at a comfortable height and lift your legs up into the air. However, this time you are required to spread your legs as far as comfortable and again attempt to touch your toes. Many jumpers make the mistake of splitting your legs as if you were doing a Star Jump (See above). This is incorrect. Make sure you lift your legs out in front of you. If you perform this trick correctly, you should make the appearance of sitting on the floor with your legs out and apart just like you were stretching before an event.
Pro Tip: It is always recommended that you stretch before and after jumping on a trampoline. Not only does this improve your flexibility, it makes your tricks look extra sharp.
